About Harrogate

Harrogate therapeutic waters and the RHS Harlow Carr gardens have made it a popular destination for tourists in the West Riding of Yorkshire. The Yorkshire Dales National Park and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are located just over two hours’ drive (13 kilometers) from the city center. High Harrogate and Low Harrogate, two minor towns, merged to form modern-day Harrogate in the seventeenth century. The town was rated Britain’s “happiest place to live” in polls for three years running (2013-2015).

The town center is home to both the Harrogate train station and the Harrogate bus station. The airport of Leeds Bradford is located southwest of Harrogate, 10 miles (or 16 km) away. Two major thoroughfares pass through Harrogate; the A61 links the city to Leeds and Ripon, and the A59 links it to York and Skipton. Both Wetherby and the A1(M) may be reached from Harrogate via the A661, while the A658 from Bradford provides a southern bypass of Harrogate. According to the UK census of 2011, Harrogate was home to 73,576 people.

Arx celebris fontibus, or “a citadel renowned for its springs,” is the town’s motto.
