In the year 894, the Saxons and the Danish Vikings fought in Benfleet. At the conclusion of the Saxon era, the area was especially susceptible to Viking raids due to its proximity to the Thames and other waterways. The Vikings established a stronghold at Benfleet. King Alfred’s army, led by his son Edward the Older and his son-in-law Earl Aethelred of Mercia, eventually beat the Vikings in battle. Afterwards, the Saxons constructed a church as a mark of gratitude for their success against the Vikings.
