About Conwy

The town of Conwy formerly romanized as Conway, is the county seat of Conwy County Borough and the market and community center of North Wales. The fortified settlement and castle are located on the western bank of the Conwy River, across from Deganwy on the eastern side of the river. The area was once part of Caernarfonshire and then Gwynedd. With the addition of Deganwy and Llandudno Junction, the total population of the area in 2011 was 14,753.

Conwy is located on both sides of the Conwy River, however the east bank is considered to be part of the Llandudno Junction post town and not the Conwy post town. In 2011, 4,065 people called the ward on the western side of the river home.

An official estimate from the Office for National Statistics places the population of Conwy County Borough at around 116,200 people

The river was previously known as the “Cynwy,” a combination of the old Welsh words for “chief” and “water.”
