About Skelmersdale
Located on the River Tawd in Lancashire, England, Skelmersdale is about 10 kilometers (16 miles) west of Wigan, 21 kilometers (13 miles) northeast of Liverpool, and 15 kilometers (24 miles) southwest of Preston. Its population in 2006 was 38,813. Locals pronounce the name Skem with a /skm/.
The town was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, but the modern town center and much of the surrounding residential neighborhoods were built during the 1960s as part of a second wave of new towns. As it is located on the Lancashire Coalfield, the town grew rapidly during the 19th century as a coal center during the rise of the industrial economy.
Skelmersdale sits in a small valley on the Tawd River. As a result of careful planning, the town’s central area is heavily forested while nevertheless being home to densely packed neighborhoods. The Beacon Point and a golf course can be found in the Beacon Country Park to the east of Skelmersdale. And the town council is working on improving the Tawd Valley Park, which cuts through the middle of town.
St. Helens lies to the south, the settlement of Up Holland to the east, and the administrative center of West Lancashire, Ormskirk, to the north-west. In addition, the city is on the outskirts of Wigan and Greater Manchester. To the south of Skelmersdale is where the M58 motorway between Wigan and Liverpool can be found.
Skelmersdale was first referenced in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was divided into two distinct sections: the New Town, developed mostly in the 1960s as a second-wave new town, and the Old Town, located in the town’s southwestern corner. Skelmersdale is subdivided into seven wards (North, South, Birch Green, Ashurst, Digmoor, Moorside, and Tanhouse).
