Modern Airdrie has kept its historic core, which serves as a focal point for the town’s many retail and entertainment options, reflecting its origins as a market town.

One of the United Kingdom’s four public observatories is located in Airdrie. The Airdrie Observatory is a great place for families to spend the day, as it is both educational and entertaining.

Both the Airdrie Golf Club and the Airdreonans Football Club were established in 1877 and 1878, respectively. The first ever penalty kick was taken in 1891 at Broomfield Park, the town’s football stadium. Airdrie even hosted a racecourse in the 1890s, albeit briefly.

Cumbernauld and Coatbridge are easily accessible from Airdrie and have several activities that the whole family may enjoy.

It was in AD577 that the Gaelic term for “high hill pasture” was adopted as the city’s name. In this year, Aidan, the “perfidious” King of Kintyre, and Rydderech, “the abundant” King of Strathclyde, clashed at the Battle of Arderyth or Airdrie.

Airdrie is located on the ‘Hogs Back,’ a ridge that stretches from east to west. The Monks of Newbattle built an agricultural grange at Drumpellier, a courthouse in Kipps, a chapel near Chapelhall, and a few grist mills in the surrounding area.
