About Telford

Telford is a market town in the county of Shropshire in England. Telford and Wrekin is an administratively separate borough in the county of Shropshire, England. The settlement lies within the interior, close to the Severn River.

The Wrekin, a prominent hill close to the city, is a component of the Shropshire Hills, which are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. South of town is the Ironbridge Gorge, also a World Heritage Site. Ironbridge Gorge and the surrounding area are famous as “The Birthplace of Industry” because to the extensive building done there during the Industrial Revolution on the Shropshire Coalfield.

Due to the completion of the M54 motorway in 1983, the town now has better road connections to the rest of the West Midlands conurbation; Wolverhampton is 19 miles (31 km) to the south east, and Birmingham is 28 miles (45 km) in the same direction. There were 142,723 people in the town as of the 2011 census, whereas the 2017 estimate for the entire borough was 175,271. Although Shrewsbury is just around 15 miles (24 km) to the west, it is still Shropshire’s largest settlement.
