About Southend-on-Sea

Southend, officially known as Southend-on-Sea, is a city and borough in southern Essex, England. It’s located 40 miles (64 km) east of central London, on the north bank of the Thames Estuary. Towards the north is Rochford, while to the west is Castle Point. The Southend Pier in this area is the longest leisure pier in the world. The London Southend Airport may be found to the north of downtown.

Located at the southernmost tip of the community of Prittlewell, Southend-on-Sea was initially made up of a handful of humble fishermen’s shacks and farms. The earliest structures along the area that would become Southend’s High Street were finished in the 1790s. With a visit from Princess Caroline of Brunswick in the 19th century, Southend gained popularity as a beach resort, prompting the building of Southend Pier. The city’s popularity as a vacation spot dropped off significantly beginning in the 1960s. Because it had one of the earliest electronic telephone exchanges in the UK, Southend rebranded itself as the birthplace of the Access credit card. Several historical buildings were demolished after the 1960s when the city’s core was transformed into a commercial and retail hub.
