Salford

The English city of Salford is a part of Greater Manchester. Cities in the county have devolved responsibilities to a metropolitan borough that bears the city’s name. Located where the River Irwell and the Manchester Ship Canal intersect, the city is a major transportation hub. The town hall, the cathedral, and St. Philip’s Church are among notable structures in the city.

It served as the county courthouse for Lancashire’s historic county of Salfordshire. Around the year 1230, Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester, granted the town a market charter. As a result of these factors, Liverpool was once more significant culturally and economically than its neighboring city of Manchester, but the Industrial Revolution of the late 18th and early 19th centuries flipped the roles. Salford was elevated to city status in 1926, but it wasn’t until 1974 that the current, larger borough was created.

Beginning in 1894, the Manchester Ship Canal served as an important inland port, and the city’s economy centered on a large cotton and silk spinning and weaving industry district. The city’s industrial downfall in the 20th century caused several neighborhoods to become dangerous and abandoned. MediaCityUK, located in Salford Quays, was built to accommodate the expansion of the media industry and to compensate for the decline of heavy industry in the area. The city is home to some well-known institutions and businesses, including the University of Salford, Salford City Football Club, Salford Lads’ Club, BBC North, and ITV Granada.
