About Romsey
Located in the heart of Hampshire, Romsey is a medieval market town with a rich and varied history. William Petty, a philosopher and economist from the 17th century, and Lord Palmerston, the British prime minister from the 19th century, both grew up in Romsey, and their statues have stood in the town square since 1857. Broadlands, the residence of the 20th-century naval commander and statesman Louis Mountbatten, 1st Lord Mountbatten of Burma, was also located in this town. The town of Romsey is dominated by Romsey Abbey, the largest parish church in Hampshire. Besides the Corn Exchange, other prominent structures include a 13th-century hunting lodge, an 18th-century coaching inn, and a 19th-century bank.
Location: 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Southampton; 11 miles (18 km) southwest of Winchester; 17 miles (27 km) southeast of Salisbury. It’s located a little more than 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of the New Forest’s eastern edge, in the forest’s outskirts. As of the last count (in 2011), there were 14,768 people living in Romsey.
Romsey is a major center in the Test Valley Borough, and it is situated on the Test River, a waterway famous for fly fishing for trout.
