About Rochester

With an estimated population of 211,328 in 2020, Rochester is the county seat of Monroe County and the fourth-most populous city in New York after New York City, Buffalo, and Yonkers. Rochester, New York is the heart of a metropolitan area that spans six counties and contains one million people. Initially due to the lush Genesee River Valley, which spawned numerous flour mills, and later as an industrial center, the city was one of the first boomtowns in the United States.

Rochester became a global center for science, technology, and research due in large part to the fact that it is the birthplace and home of some of America’s most iconic companies, including Eastman Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb (along with Wegmans, Gannett, Paychex, Western Union, French’s, Constellation Brands, Rag, and others). Greater Rochester’s economy has benefited greatly from the presence of numerous prestigious universities and their research programs, including the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology.  Social and political movements, such as abolitionism and the fight for women’s rights, both have significant roots in Rochester’s fertile ground.
