About Plymouth
Plymouth is a city and unitary authority in the county of Devon, in the south-west of England. It’s on the coast of Devon, some 193 miles (311 km) from London and 36 miles (58 km) south-west of Exeter. Cornwall provides a western and southwestern boundary.
It was in the Bronze Age when the first colony in what would later become Plymouth appeared on Mount Batten. As the Roman Empire expanded, this town served as a trading post until it was outdone by the rich village of Sutton, which was created in the ninth century and is now known as Plymouth. The Spanish Armada was intercepted and ultimately defeated by an English fleet that had its base in Plymouth that year, 1588. The Pilgrim Fathers left Plymouth in 1620 to found the second English settlement in the territory that would become the United States of America: Plymouth Colony. During 1642 through 1646, the town was under a Parliamentarian siege during the English Civil War.
Plymouth expanded as a commercial port throughout the Industrial Revolution, taking in goods and people from the Americas and shipping out local resources (tin, copper, lime, china clay and arsenic).
