About Lowestoft

Lowestoft is a town and civil parish on the Suffolk coast in the East Suffolk area. It is the largest town in its district and the most easterly settlement in the United Kingdom, located 177 kilometers north-east of London, 61 kilometers north-east of Ipswich, and 22 kilometers south-east of Norwich. Almost 70,000 people are expected to live in the urban core. The expansion of its fishing sector and popularity as a beach resort on account of its spacious sandy shores are largely responsible for the city’s current state of affairs. In the 1960s, oil and gas exploitation in the North Sea took control as the fishing industry collapsed. Lowestoft is becoming a hub for the renewable energy business in the region, despite the fact that these have also decreased.

This area has yielded some of Britain’s earliest evidence of human habitation. In 2005, flint implements were unearthed in the Pakefield cliffs of south Lowestoft, allowing researchers to date human settlement in the area back 700,000 years.

The area was inhabited during the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages, as well as during the Roman and Saxon periods. The Bloodmoor Hill Saxon cemetery in south Lowestoft has yielded a number of interesting artifacts. The name comes from the Norwegian given name Hlothver and the Old Norse word toft, which means “homestead.”  Lothnwistoft, Lothuwistoft, Lestoffe, Laistoe, Loystoft, and Laystoft are all historical variations on the name.
