About Caernarfon

With a population of 9,852, Caernarfon is a royal town, community, and port in Gwynedd, Wales (with Caeathro).  Located on the east side of the Menai Strait, across from Anglesey, along the A487 highway. Caernarfon is surrounded by Snowdonia to the east and south-east, while the city of Bangor is about 8.6 miles (13.8 km) to the north-east. Both the Anglicized Carnarvon and the Welsh-sounding Caernarvon were officially replaced in the years 1926 and 1974.

The Menai Strait was populated because of the wealth of natural resources in the area. During the time period known as Roman Britain, the area was inhabited by the Celtic people known as the Ordovices. In the early first century A.D., the Romans built Fort Segontium to control the Ordovices and the rest of Britain. Caernarfon became a part of the Kingdom of Gwynedd after the Roman Empire’s control in Britain came to an end in 382. During the Norman invasion of Wales in the late 11th century, William the Conquer ordered the construction of a motte and bailey castle in Caernarfon. As a result of his failure, Wales maintained its autonomy until about 1283.

The English conquered Gwynedd in the 13th century after its ruler, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, refused to pay tribute to Edward I of England. After this, the English began work on Caernarfon Castle, one of the largest and most impressive defenses in all of Wales.
