About Westcliff-on-sea

Southend-on-Sea, in the ceremonial county of Essex, England, is home to a neighborhood known as Westcliff-on-Sea, or simply Westcliff.  Located around 55 kilometers (34 miles) east of London, it sits on the north bank of the lower Thames Estuary.

The local quaternary geology has been eroded into cliffs that look out over the Thames Estuary and the Kent coast to the south. Through the construction of groynes and the transportation of sand, the coastline was turned into sandy beaches. At this juncture, the estuary is largely mud flats. During low tide, the mud flats are exposed when the sea recedes some 600 meters from the beach.

Prior to the era of 1860-1880, when the Milton Estate and surrounding land was sold to speculators who liked the name Westcliff-on-Sea, the southern section of what is now known as Westcliff, south of the London Road, was known as Milton or Milton Hamlet.

When it first opened to the public in 1895, the station was known as Milton, but by the time it was completed in 1895, the name had changed to Westcliff.

Brassey, Peto, Betts & Co. originally constructed the region between Milton Road and Hamlet Court Road as a “upper class suburban hideaway” and gave it the name The Hamlet.

On the London Road, where Nazareth House now stands, Milton Hall stood until its demolition in 1900. Hamlet Court, a stately mansion located at the intersection of Hamlet Court Road, Canewdon Road, and Ditton Court Road, was torn down in 1929.
