About Welwyn

The English settlement and civil parish of Welwyn is located in the county of Hertfordshire. Digswell and Oaklands are also considered to be part of the parish proper. To differentiate it from the much newer and larger settlement of Welwyn Garden City, about a mile to the south, Old Welwyn or Welwyn Village is often used.

The willow trees that line the banks of the River Mimram gave rise to the village’s name, which comes from the Old English word welig. Unlike nearby Willian, which is likely to mean simply “the willows,” this name is more precisely translated as “at the willows” because it is an evolution from weligun, the dative form of the word.

Welwyn may be related to the Cornish town of Heligan, whose name comes from helygen, the willow tree, because both words share a root with the Old English word sealh. High Welwyn was the name given to the area around the present-day Digswell when it was initially settled at the turn of the twentieth century.

Welwyn is home to two public schools and one private institution.
