About Falkirk

Historically part of the county of Stirlingshire, the town of Falkirk is located in the Central Lowlands of Scotland. It’s located in the Forth Valley, about 33 kilometers (km) northeast of Glasgow and 20 miles (km) northwest of Edinburgh.

In 2001, there were 32,422 people living in Falkirk, according to the UK Census. With an estimated population of 34,570 in 2008, the city was the 20th most populated in Scotland. The Falkirk council area includes the communities of Falkirk, Grangemouth, Bo’ness, Denny, Camelon, Larbert, and Stenhousemuir in addition to the cluster of Braes villages, and has a total population of 156,800.

At the crossroads of the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals, the city grew rapidly throughout the Industrial Revolution as a hub for heavy manufacturing. Falkirk, supported by the Carron Company in neighboring Carron, was a major hub of the iron and steel industry in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Among the many things this company produced were carronades for the Royal Navy, pillar boxes, and phone booths. They also built flat irons, stoves, fireplaces, benches, and railings. In the previous half century, the importance of manufacturing to the economy has declined, making way for retail and tourism. Despite this, several foreign industries continue to call Falkirk home, including Alexander Dennis, the largest bus production company in the UK.
