About Beccles
Located in Suffolk, Beccles is a market town and civil parish in England. The town is located on the A145 and A12 highways, 109 miles (175 km) from London, 98 miles (158 km) north-east of London as the crow flies, 16 miles (26 km) south-east of Norwich, and 33 miles (53 km) north-northeast of the county town of Ipswich, according to the milestone. Lowestoft is to the east, while Great Yarmouth is to the north-east; both are nearby towns. Located on the banks of the Waveney, close to the boundaries of The Broads National Park, is the town of Waveney.
According to the most recent census (2011), the population was 10,123.
The combined population of Worlingham and Beccles is 13,868. Worlingham is a suburb of Beccles.
In 1978, Beccles became twinned with the French town of Petit-Couronne.
A piece of public property known as Beccles Common may be found in the town’s northwest corner. Central to Beccles Common is a pillbox from either 1940 or 1914, both of which date to the Second World War. Boney’s Isle is a man-made hill in the center of the common. This place was once known as Bonaparte Island, thus the name. Boney’s Island derives from two different places. More commonly, it was a Napoleonic prisoner-of-war camp.
